Mechanical Engineer

Permanent employee, Full-time · mittemitte GmbH

About us

By putting humans first Mitte wants to improve life with better water. Having created the world’s first smart water system inspired by the natural water cycle, we are driven to reinvent the way water is consumed globally. Our solution allows users to create personalized mineralized water at home, giving them control over their drinking water while minimizing plastic wastage.

Our process works in two simple steps. First, it purifies water with a proprietary distillation-based method. After the purification, the water is enhanced through a unique, patent-pending mineralization process, where purified water flows through a cartridge which contains several layers of mineral ingredients.

Mitte was initiated in the summer of 2015. Our international team consists of members from over fifteen countries across six continents and is backed by experienced investors. We are an entrepreneurial group, excited about using engineering and design to bring an innovative and sustainable product to market.

Your mission

This is an engineering position in the hardware team. You will have a direct impact on our first Mitte home device as well as upcoming products. During the development phase, you will design and test prototypes on experimental setups to validate the hardware performance. Your root-cause analysis of failures and quality reviews will optimize the design in terms of robustness as well as cost-effective manufacturability. This role will allow you to deepen your broad engineering skills applied within a multidisciplinary environment covering mechanics, electronics, mechatronics, system control, user interface design, as well as design for manufacturing. Your results will support our next steps from final product definition, design for manufacturing, and help us bring Mitte to the world.

Responsibilities

  • Design, review, build, and test prototypes (hardware components) and optimize the current design of our first Mitte home device (alpha and beta machines). Support the specification and conceptual design of future products

  • Create 3D models using CAD software to support general product development. Guide our external engineering partners to ensure   manufacturability as well as support the quality control during certification

  • Ensure proper technical integration of components and subsystems and implement requirements regarding the water mineralization process and general system control.

  • Correspond regularly with manufacturers and oversee production planning.

  • Define interfaces, create modular concepts, ensure technical feasibility, and follow up on iterations during a multidisciplinary design and manufacturing phase.

  • Research, investigate, and evaluate technical solutions already existing in the market and adapt those to our environment regarding mass production and design for manufacturing of e.g. mineral cartridges.

  • Design and develop test setups and operate equipment to experimentally assess the performance of hardware components, subsystems, and control units (efficiency, lifetime, reliability, robustness, etc.) and validate the functionality referring to the initial specifications.

  • Support the user interface design (hardware) and enable user tests on our prototypes to validate features and functionality related to user tasks.

Your profile

The Position requires applied knowledge in the field of mechanical engineering, product design, and research and development.

  • You have experience in a similar position in the industry.

  • You hold a  university degree as a mechanical engineer, mechatronic engineer, electromechanical engineer, or equivalent.

  • You were previously responsible for designing hardware components, testing prototypes, and developing final products. You’ve applied and gained your hands-on skills during setting up experiments and maintaining test rigs including a wide range of laboratory equipment and tools.

  • You have applied knowledge in at least two of the following disciplines:

    • Quality control: Materials, FMEA, manufacturing support

    • Electronics: Components, circuitry schematics, and PCB design

    • Programming: Data analysis, signal processing, web-based data storage, data visualization e.g. using Matlab, Python or C/C++

    • Hydraulics: Pipes, valves, and pumps

    • Certification: B2C or B2B hardware products (e.g. FCC, CE)

  • You have a problem-solving mentality and use an analytical approach to set the right priorities and tackle complex technical challenges.

  • You are committed to creating clear documentation of requirements and boundary conditions as a way to enable you and others to create technical solutions as a holistic optimum.

  • You have the ability to work independently as well as cooperate with members of other teams

  • You are well organized and proactive

  • You are able to speak and write English fluently

Pluses
  • You were part of a team that brought a hardware product to market, ideally with support by Chinese manufacturers

  • You have project management experience in a multicultural/interdisciplinary environment, ideally in a Start-Up

  • You have previous experience related to water science, ideally in the food and beverage industry

  • Familiar with e.g. Arduino and Raspberry Pi, visual studios IDEs

  • You speak German
